215pp., pbk. 0747555923 | This is a Fantasy story about Kira. She lives in a fairly primitive community where everyone has to be useful. Kira has a useless leg and is considered a burden to her village by the other people. Most babies who are born with a disability are killed at birth but her mother has always protected her, but now her mother is dead. But one thing can help Kira. She has a special talent for weaving and this could help her to survive. I found it hard to finish reading this book. I dont like fantasy stories as much as I like humour and scary stories. It was upsetting when the book started with Kira yelling out Mother when her mother was dead. I would change the main part of the story to tell it with her mother dying later in the story, not on the first page. The middle of the book was more interesting when Kira started to do her weaving, but overall I thought it could have been more exciting. My teacher and I thought that maybe this story is more suited to older children of about 14 or more. Kirsty, aged 12, Adelaide Hills, South Australia. |
