| The main characters in, In Flanders Fields are the young soldier boy and the red robin. In Flanders Fields is a story of a young soldier boy that after a long time of war risked his life over a red robin trapped in a barb-wire fence. In Flanders Fields is a great book. It first got my eye by the beautiful illustration on the front. There are more of these great illustrations throughout the book. They are very detailed but dont involve much colour but that doesnt stop them from being magnificent. This book is worth getting in trouble for reading under the bed covers at night but your parents may not catch you because it is a short book containing only 32 pages. I recommend this book for ages 6 to 14. This book is not part of a series. Dione, 10, Canberra |
| The gunfire ceases abruptly on Christmas morning, a deadly silence creeps over the battlefield. This is the beginning of a story of war, and excellent one at that, Flanders Field. Norman Jorgensen captures the emotions of war, fear, malice, sorrow and mourning. This story is about a young man in a war, he sees an animal trapped in no man's land caught on barbed wire. He wants to save this animal to make up for all the others killed by war. This book is captivating in the sense that it makes you understand what war does to people. It makes you think how lucky we are to be free of war, and how free we've become because of people like that man, risking their lives to save the lives of others. He did what he had to do to save that little robin, sure he only saved one bird, but that's one life that wasn't lost during the dark and deceitful times of war. Many families will not be reunited again and some shall never be made at all. Those who survive the terrible ordeal of war are permanently scarred by it, both mentally and physically. In this book it proves that no one will ever be the same once they have been through any war. Life teaches us many new and different things but the most important is to remember to cherish what you have, and never take it for granted. | |
| This is adventure book of a brave soldier who saves a bird in a war-zone. The man is in the trenches in a country destroyed by war. The soldier sees the bird caught in barbed wire between the trenches. He waves a white flag of truce and climbs out of the trench, risking his life to free the bird. The characters are drawn to look like the real thing and the illustrations are very realistic. The illustrations suit the story. The colours are dull except the red robin. To read the book you need the illustrations so that you can see the terrible conditions in the trenches. The purpose of the story is to show people that war is terrible and to show what all the brave men and women who went to war had to put up with. It makes you respect them. It makes you respect the soldier for his kind deed. Even though he was in a terrible war he showed feelings for a little bird. It is a story you would read out loud or alone. It is a book you People of all ages can enjoy this book and it tugs at the heart.
