Sailmaker Lothian 2002 Sequel to The Keeper | Sailmaker is about a young boy named Joel he has just bought a new windsurfer but he has ripped the sail and the only one who can fix it is the old spooky sail maker. Joel takes it to the sail maker. He seems like a nice old fellow at first then just when they are about to leave he tells them a story about a ghost that used to leer around the lighthouse but now hes back leering around his kitchen. What should Joel do? Stay a night with Vern the sail maker to witness its just rats or leave it alone and forget about it? Find out his decision by reading Sailmaker. I recommend that children at the age of 9 to14 will enjoy this book most. When you read this book you are hooked from the very beginning, you can feel the atmosphere the author is trying to create, the plot is quite easy to follow, the ending will satisfy anyone, and you cant put the book down especially near the ending. Iit might be worth getting in for reading under the bed covers at night. The characters are so real you can hear them talking and you care about what happens to them in the end. It doesnt feel like you are eavesdropping because you arent there with them. The language is sometimes not appropriate for the audience but the words create images in your mind. The style and size of the print is easy to read it is a read-aloud and a read-alone book. Dione, 10, Canberra |
| The book I'm reviewing is called Sailmaker, The author is Roseanne Hawke and the book was published in 2002 by Lothian Books. The genre of this book is realistic fiction. Plot Joel also goes to an auction and buys a windsurfer. When he gets home he tries it out and rips the sail, so he goes to the old sailmaker ,and Vern tells him about the ghost on the island. Joel doesn't believe the sailmaker (he thinks the sailmaker has rats) so he organises to stay the night. He does and hears a tap-tap sound coming from the kitchen so he checks the kitchen and then hears the sound of footsteps. Sso he opens the door only to find a penguin. He goes back to bed and remembers penguins don't make the sound of footsteps. Joel decides to stay the night again and the second time he hears clanging coming from the lighthouse. But I wont spoil the end. Characters Mia has Asian coloured skin and wears a denim bucket hat. She has dark hair and dark eyes but that's just about it ,the story doesn't say too much about her even though she's a main character. But I would say she's a loyal trustworthy friend. Vern is a alcoholic and talks to his dog the story doesn't really say much more about him. But I would say he is caring, likes kids, loves living by himself on the island and he's kind. Dev used to belong to a bikie gang but then he was put in jail and when he came out he answered Joel's advertisement in the paper about getting an adopted dad. So now he lives with Joel and his grandma and Joel calls him dad. Lauren, Uraidlar, SA |
