Rebecca wakes up one morning to find that she is a horse. The strange thing is that nobody notices except her brother, Kevin. Later that day when she does P.E. (sport) at school, Rebecca runs so fast she beats the world record. The teachers advise her to enter the Olympics or the Melbourne Cup. At home, whilst playing with her brother, she damages the house. This means that the money that may have taken her to the Cup, has to be spent on house repairs.

Rebecca wakes up the next morning thinking the whole thing had been a dream. But had it? When a fly lands on her Saddle Club posters, she swishes it away with her tail.

This amusing story is one of the Hotshots series and would be enjoyed by 8 to 10 year olds. Emma Quay’s pencil drawings make it even funnier still. If you were browsing a bookshelf this book would stand out with its bright, appealing cover. The horse on the cover even has braces and pigtails!!

Rebecca loves horses and watching The Saddle Club. But overnight she turns into a horse and attempts to enter the Melbourne Cup! Unfortunately this means she breaks things! This book tells us about her day as a horse.

This book was written to be funny and it was!

The book was very entertaining and we really liked the pictures. It was very hard to put down because we wanted to know what happened in the end.

We felt the book was very impressive and we would like to read others like it, by the same author.

We recommend this book to other children 6 – 11 years.

Horse Girl was written by John Larkin and illustrated by Emma Quay

This was about a girl, named Rebecca who turns into a horse. She watches The Saddle Club every day on TV. She has horse posters and pictures on her walls and on her books. When she was sleeping, she turned into a horse and then she had to go to school.

She entered a race and she won the 100m race. Her teacher, Mr Vanderhum thought she was so good that she should go in another race. However, she was chased by her brother, Kevin and she broke up the kitchen and damaged the walls.

One night while she slept, she turned into a girl again!

The purpose: so that it is funny to read.

We liked the story in the beginning because it was easy to follow. The climax was exciting, especially when she did well in the race.

It was hard to put the book down.

Rebecca is the best character and her brother Kevin was very funny.

We liked the pictures a lot. We would like to get it as a gift and / or give it away to a friend.

We would tell others who are 6 years old or older to read this book.

In this story Rebecca Yallop turned into a horse because she loved watching Saddle Club. She went to school as a horse and when she played chasings at home she broke the kitchen very badly. Finally she turns back into a girl.

This book was written to entertain children. We were ‘hooked’ into the story straight away. The story built to a climax when she made so much mess! The main characters were funny and easy to follow.

We loved this book because we could make a coloured movie in our minds of the story. We would like to read more books by this author.

We recommend it to boys and girls aged 7 to 14.

The novel we read is called Horse Girl. The author is John Larkin and the illustrator is Emma Quay. It was published in 2004.

Horse Girl is about a girl called Rebecca, who dreamed that she was a horse. She loved horses and her favourite books and television shows were The Saddle Club. Rebecca even wished she was in The Saddle Club.

Rebecca has a brother called Kevin, and he was the only person to notice that Rebecca was a horse. At school Rebecca raced like a horse and was going to run in The Melbourne Cup.

Kevin and Rebecca played chasings in the house, which was against the family rules. They actually destroyed the kitchen.

The author wrote this book to entertain us. John Larkin knows that girls like horses. We could not stop reading this book! We read it all in one go! We liked Rebecca because she is like us. We thought the teachers, Ms Pharlap and Mr Vanderhum were funny.

We liked how Camilla Snodgrass always said, “You’re so busted!”

We would all like to read this book again, and think it should go in our school library. We recommend this book for girls and boys aged seven and up. Some younger children might enjoy listening to this story.

We absolutely loved Horse Girl, and you will too!
